The academic community estimates that Sudeoksa (temple) was founded during the reign of King Wedeokwang of Baekje (554~597), and the Baekjewadang (roofing tiles) found on the early temple site within the precincts provide circumstantial evidence to the academic estimate. Buddhist Priest Hyehyeon delivered sermons in the temple in the time of King Mu of Baekje, and Naonghwasang repaired the temple in King Gongmin of Goryeo. Mangongseonsa preached there in the second year of King Gojong's reign of Joseon. The temple is renowned as a main Korean Zen Buddhist temple.
